The Air Force recently awarded contracts to the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation and the Boeing Company for Phase I of the Advanced Medium Short Takeoff and Landing Transport (AMST). Phase I is a feasibility study and provides for additional analysis of design performance tradeoffs.
The A-X close air support competitive fly-off evaluation was completed in December. Competing in the first Air Force “fly-before-buy” evaluation in many years were the Northrop Corporation A-9A and the Fairchild Republic A-10A.
A decision to approve the A-X for full-scale development will be based upon the flight test results. The winning contract would complete full-scale development and begin providing production aircraft by the mid-70’s.
